Rattan and Wicker explained
Many of you ask, what is the difference between rattan and wicker? The answer, simply, is that Rattan is a product and Wicker is a process.
The terms 'rattan' or 'wicker' are often used interchangeably to describe all kinds of baskets and furniture. However, rattan is a type of tropical palm material used to make outdoor furniture and baskets, whilst wicker is a weaving process that uses natural materials, such as bamboo and willow. This process has been used since ancient Egyptian times.
Sometimes wicker products are described as 'cane' instead but it is essentially the same thing as wicker. Rattan is a specific material so rattan baskets are made of rattan only whereas wicker baskets can be made of a combination of bamboo, willow or rattan.
